Sleep bags are roomy on purpose. Go by the length for your baby's age rather than sizing up. A bag that's too long lets baby slip down inside it.
A sleep bag is a wearable blanket. It replaces loose blankets, which aren't recommended in a baby's sleep space, and keeps baby warm with nothing that can ride up over their face.
How it should fit
- Snug at the neck and armholes. Zipped up, the neckline should not slide up past baby's chin. If it does, the bag is too big.
- Never size up for growing room. A bag that's too big lets baby slip down inside it, which is a suffocation risk.
- Roomy through the hips and legs, so legs can bend up and out freely.
How to use it
- Always place baby on their back to sleep, on a firm, flat mattress in a crib, cradle or bassinet that meets Canadian regulations.
- Keep the sleep space clear: no blankets, pillows, bumper pads or toys.
- Don't add blankets over the bag. Choose the TOG for your room temperature and check the back of baby's neck. If it's hot or sweaty, remove a layer.
- Nothing should cover baby's head. Never add a hat or hood for sleep, and never add weight to the bag.
- Swaddle bags: stop using the arms-in position at the first sign of rolling and switch to arms out.
